1966, 100 minutes. Director Roberto Rossellini is regarded as the father of Italian neorealism - a movement which came to include Vittorio De Sica. Frederico Fellini and Luchino Visconti. Rossellini pioneered this principle of presenting things "as they are" in films like Open City and Paisan. The Rise of Louis XIV was one in a series of historical biographies which includes Augustine of Hippo, Blaise Pascal, and Socrates. Rossellini's Louis is an ordinary man whose extraordinary reign (from 1643-1715) brought the monarchy to its zenithand marks the great classical age of French culture. The pomp and etiquette surrounding his life symbolized the almost divine dignity to which he had elevated the office of king. His rise to political power was complicated by intigues and internal power struggles. He emerged, however, as a sophisticated individual who paid a considerable personal price for the power of the throne. In Rise of Louis XIV, Rossellini revolutionizes the style of historical narrative. Rather than presenting the king and his court in traditionally grandiose terms, the tone is completely realistic. Rossellini achieves the documentary-like precision at which he has been aiming since his first feature, Open City. |

C'est un personnage trés complexe, de plus il a beaucoup de charme auprés des filles et il aime posséder. Olivia Atkins lui résiste et pourtant c'est la seule jeune fille du village qui l'attire. Quand il perd le contrôle, c'est à cause du vent qui rend fou. aux jeux du Réverend Nicolas Jones, Stevens est le pire de tous les mauvais fils. L'histoire est racontée par le vieux Stevens Brown qui agit en narrateur puisque ce film se conjuge à plusieurs temps.

"A painter is lost if he finds himself," surrealist artist Max Ernst once said, and his work is dominated by visions of change and metamorphosis. One of the most influential artists of the 20th century, Ernst believed that aesthetic quality was irrelevant to art and concentrated on creating symbols, often portraying men and women as birds or machines. As a means of inspiration, he experimented by rubbing scraping, and smearing paint to find images to use in his paintings. This film focuses on the period Ernst lived in the United States, between 1941 and 1952. Using photographs, film footage, and tape recordings of Ernst himself, it details the influence of the Arizona desert and the Hopi Indians on his work. Made 20 years ago, this film is being released on video to coincide with major exhibitions of Ernst's work in New York, London, Stuttgart, and Dusseldorf commemorating the centenary of his birth in 1991. |
